I’ve always thought that Christianity was just a very large cult and nothing made that more clear than Jesus Camp. Besides being laugh-out-loud funny at times (e.g., when the lady blesses the PowerPoint presentation), the whole thing was very creepy and sad. No wonder people in the rest of the world think that Americans are a bunch of whack jobs…because we are! As bizarre as some of the religious fanatacism seems to us in the Middle East, you have got to believe that when those people watch things like this movie they must think that we are bizarre fanatics as well.

If you are looking for a peek into why George W. Bush was elected, watch this movie.

Churches have to sell their services to people like any other commercial enterprise and I can usually count on at least one of their advertisting tools for a good laugh just like I do from Super Bowl commercials (with the exception of this last Super Bowl, of course). Many of the churches that I drive by use those signs that high schools use with the little plastic letters that slide on and off to make announcements. Some of the messages on those boards advertising the next Sunday’s sermon absolutely crack me up. For example, I once saw a sign on a church message board that said the title of the coming Sunday’s sermon was “Word Up”. Today, I saw one that made me laugh so hard that I almost crashed the car. It said, “God wants spiritual fruits and not religious nuts.” Now, there just are so many ways to make of this sign that I don’t even know where to start. It’s like the episode of South Park where Cartman saw the people with butts for faces and thought that it was so funny that he couldn’t laugh anymore…it was like he blew a fuse. I mean, I sort of agree with the idea that God, whatever or whoever that is, probably doesn’t care for religious nuts. But I’m not sure that the little church on Katella in Cypress can claim to know what God wants or doesn’t want, but that’s just me.
