Norm MacDonald correctly identified the two worst jobs. In second place: crack whore. In first place: assistant crack whore (read the transcript of that particular episode of Weekend Update here). It’s hard to think of any job that would be worse than either of those. However the Wall Street Journal recently profiled a job that would not be too far down MacDonald’s list: nuclear diving. Nuclear divers dive down into the water that cools nuclear reactors to make repairs or conduct inspections. While I get that you might be geeked out enough about diving (I used to be a certified SCUBA diver) and would want to try to make a living out of it. I also understand that there are some people who get a thrill out of taking wild risks as a career. The job by itself would not rank it as high on MacDonald’s list as it does. The kicker is that in exchange for diving into water that is 100 degrees because of the nuclear power rods that the water is supposed to cool, you can earn as much as $30,000! I think my gardener makes more than that and he’s only exposed to the radiation of the sun. Even the assistant nuclear diver doesn’t actually have to go into the water and become exposed to radiation! I think the next time I have a bad day, I will try to remind myself that I am at least not required to get into a pool of water in a nuclear power reactor so I can earn all of $30,000.
By the way, in looking for links for this post, I came across a number of bizarre Norm MacDonald fan websites:
These sad and bizarre websites just serve as further evidence of the wierd facsination that people have with celebrity. For further insight into this phenomenon, check out the members of the Brent Spiner fanclub, known as “Spiner Femmes” in the hilarious and disturbing movie, Trekkies.
